How can naturopaths help with Infertility?
Fertility rates have been noticeably decreasing over the years, with estimates that they are expected to fall even further due to a number of environmental and physiological factors.
Factors affecting infertility:
❋ Hormonal imbalances (PCOS, endo, fibroids, thyroid issues)
❋ Nutrient deficiencies/ poor diet
❋ Stress
❋ Age
❋ Environmental pollutants & chemical exposure
Naturopaths work by looking at all of these factors to create a plan for their clients to optimise all areas of their life that could be negatively impacting their fertility. We assess blood pathology tests, provide dietary and lifestyle advice, teach you the most accurate way to confirm ovulation, and occasionally will recommend functional testing if indicated.
Some tips I have based on mistakes I’ve seen couples make are:
✺ Don’t rely on period tracking apps to predict ovulation - the data alone cannot accurately predict when you are ovulating unless you are taking your basal metabolic temperature every morning
✺ Preconception care needs to be done by both parties, which includes blood tests and addressing nutrient deficiencies and any underlying pathology
✺ Don’t rely solely on over the counter prenatal vitamins - there are many other important factors that can be modified to support fertility (e.g. diet and lifestyle)
✺ Take your time, and lay the foundations down intentionally by looking after yourself first (physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually)
Preconception care is not just about the ability to get pregnant, but also maintaining a healthy pregnancy. Preconception care should begin 3-6 months before trying to conceive, and should involve both partners.
This is something I’m passionate about and love working with clients on — I will be offering partner preconception consults soon but it’s currently not an option on my website. If you’d like to organise this, get in touch. If you prefer to have seperate appointment, you can book a standard initial consultation individually too.
